We all know when our dog is being submissive, they tend to roll over, legs up, tail between legs...
Submissive Body Language in us humans can be a little more difficult to notice.
The Body in a state of fear tends to be more closed. Being small, hunched in, arms in... motionless, trying to not be seen. We have all seen this at parties, that one or 2 people hidden in the corner, watching but not participating. Very submissive body language.
Head and chin are normally down in a submissive state which means limited eye contact.
Eyes are wide open, almost looking like a baby, making you seem very vulnerable.
Smile, actually more than non-submissive people. Tend to smile from mouth, not eyes.
Hands tend to be facing up. Sweating, white completion, tugging and face touching are also signs of a submissive state.
So why would this be important. Someone with submissive body language can actually be very difficult to persuade, as they are living in fear. If you are aware of this, you have the ability to choose to match thier state, build repport and help acheive the outcome they seek.

Lying can cause so much disruption in peoples lives. And it most cases it is so unnecessary.
Here are two ways to help you detect if someone is lying: what they say and by reading body language. Let's explore both:
Reading Body Language, is by far the best way to detect if someone is lying. Look at their eye contact... if they can't look at you, sure sign something is off. Or if they look at you too intensely, almost can't not look at you, it can also be a sign of an untruth.
Fidgeting or the inability to stay still. They are just plain uncomfortable with the situation.
Listen for their voice to be trembling or even a crack or gulping. I have a friend who gulps every time they are lying.
Lastly, watch for touching of the face, ears and nose. If this happens frequently, it is a good sign they are lying.
What they are saying:
If someone is uncomfortable with a subject and they try to change the subject. If they seem happy to move on to another subject, you may be reading them correctly and know they are not being honest.
Always, everyone... absolutes. These are great ways to know. It is too general and the lack of specifics could be a strong sign.
If they conversations continues and you start to hear inconsistencies... well need I say more.
And lastly, someone make a joke on a subject or even sarcasm, could be a sign of lying. This allows them to change topics and move away from the deception.
You maybe asking, why is this important to me. Well, if you have kids... it is very important. If you are an employer, by all means this can help make sure your employees are being honest with you. If you are a friend, you may be able to help that friend, when others who could not read body language and detect lies couldn't. It can be fun too!

As I was sitting in the back of my mini-van, yes mini-van today driving 6 hours to Las Vegas, I had time to read some... and I had time to think about my little experiment this morning. Let's face the world economy is in turmoil and my current business (the mortgage business) is just insane. It is clear that just a quick trip around my office you can determine everyone's STATE just by understanding and reading their body language. I also thought about how to change thier STATE, by forcing a change in thier body language. It was fun.
So this morning, I was in one of those fucused states as I wanted to leave by 11am. See my previous post. I had several things to do before I left, yet the mood was so strange I had to step up and play the game.
There are 2 loan officers in the office that are always sitting back in thier chairs in almost a kick back relaxed STATE. Doomsayers is a good term.... Their body language says they are king of the hill, but in reality it is saying they are kicking back and waiting for the phone to ring. Aggressive or assertive is not a term I would use for them. So I decided to see if a STATE CHANGE could move them to some action. This week in an effort to stimulate some action in those that do not act... the manager of the office gave a manaditory task of calling 25 Realtors by the 24th... ( call that many in 3 days...) ... there is a point here. So I ran into both of thier offices, high fiving them and telling them I called all 25 and was in such a state that I challenged them to do the same. It was fasinating, as the minute I walked in and did my thing... you could see thier body language change immedataly. It was as if I lit a fire under them. By the time I left I could hear them both making calls...
To be honest, what they do and how they do thier job does not affect me at all, unless they bring thier doomsayer menatlity into my world. It is up to me to allow that and I don't. But this little experiment was more about this new venture and how Body Language can change your state and make your life more productive and happier.
