I find that the most important person to influence is myself. And I would say that is true for most people. There are some that are so disciplined and driven that it is second nature to just perform. Influencing themselves is not even needed.
Those of you (and I) that need that influence, here are a few tips to help you make the life you so richly deserve.
Feel free to add to this list as you comment.
- You have to write out your plan your goals. I am not a big fan of a long term say a 10 year plan, but let's say the next 6 months. What do you want to accomplish. What will get you off the hamster wheel...
- Make sure that plan drives you and motivates you. It has to be your passion. What I call, in your Wheel house...
- Take that plan and read it daily. Tape it to your mirror or read it the minute you get up and go to bed.
- Do a chuck down of each goal... What will you do this month, next month, the next month....
- Then take those items for each month and chunk those down even further to the day you will do them.
Take that list of daily items and put them on your calender. Spend the time, it will be so worth it.
Now you will have your plan in a format that shows your daily activities to meet your goal. You may have 10 goals and each day you make do a piece of each goal or 2 or 3.
Since this is something you are passionate about... you will stay up until dawn to get it done. If not, stay up anyhow and get it done.....

I seem to always lead my discussions about persuasion in the direction of gestures and body language. Equally important to persuading anyone to your viewpoint are the words you use. Even more important is whether the words are positive or negative.
My hope here to show you how your words can help you influence or persuade anyone.
Ken, a friend and coworker, was presenting to a group of Real Estate agents. He asked me to attend to see if I could figure out why he was not persuading the audience to meet with him to see if they are fit to work together.
It was clear he was charismatic and that he was very knowledgeable. He was actually very warm. And if you knew Ken, you would know that he is the most disciplined, intense guy I know, warm is not a word that would come to mind. Yet, I can meet with an agent and getting a referral within a week or two and Ken has been calling on the same 20 for 6 months and only a few are starting to call him. He knew something wasn't working.
It became very clear right away his downfall was his words. His entire 60 minute talk was layered with negative words. "Learn how to read and understand a pre-approval letter so that you don't lose your deal." "if you pick the wrong lender, there is no way your escrow will close"
Now you may be saying, but if it is true... then what is wrong with those comments. If you are are working to persuade and influence anyone it is key to use positive words and positive outcomes. It would have been much better said this way "By making sure you know how to read and understand your pre-approval letters you will close the deal." "By picking the right lender, you ensure that you will have a successful closing" Subtle, I know. Yet that one change will make all the difference in the world.
Ken and I met after his presnetation and we spoke at length about this. He is reworking his entire talk to create a postive tone throughout. My beleif is that when he presents this information agian, the agents will be lining up to meet and work with him.

I have written about storytelling and we all know it is an important part of influencing and persuading others. One covert technique is to add a loop in your presentation or speech. The purpose of adding loops to your stories is to draw more attention, more concentration from your audience. Loops can be applied during a presentation, a training session or even during a social outing. When using loops, you're actually playing with ones unconscious mind.
So what is a loop. Starting, but not finishing a topic or story. This can be done in many ways. A speaker may have a 3 day course. They may open a loop about topic on day one and not finish it until the last day. It could be as simple as changing the subject. Let's look at an example:
"Today we are going to discuss the buy down strategy that I have created, which reminds me of a transaction I just closed...." As you can see, I opened the loop with talking about the buy down strategy, then moved into the story, without telling them what the strategy was. Later in the conversation, I would say "This is a typical rate buy down, a perminate buydown of the interest rate, all paid for by the seller, not the buyer"
I learned this earlier in the year and it has been fun to see it used over and over in the political campaigns.
Loops allow you to unconsciously persuade your audience or prospect, while you distract and kind of confuse them. It must be used ethically, but if used properly, it is very effective.

One of the best ways to PERSUADE is to tell a story. We all know that when we are attempting to persuade someone we can either go into our presentation or pitch or we can use an antidote or a story. I find a story works best. When you tell a story you pull that person into a place that a pitch does not take them. In reality the story allows the sales person to sell without selling.
When you use a story to sell or present you case, you create a rapport and limit resistance. It allows the other person to open up and may even allow you to get to a deeper level of emotion. And we all know that the key to persuading and selling is to get to the emotion. This altered emotion can lead to a sale or to a change in views that can change a prospects direction in a heart beat.
If you are attempting to persuade either in person or in writing in say marketing material keep in mind using a story to make your point is going to increase your results very quickly.
Story telling can take some practice, so read, read novels, read self help, listen to audios... you will hear stories you can use and with practice you will become a master story teller.

How do you influence your IT genius friend to drop everything to come see you to fix your computer... how?
Beg, plead... offer food and drink...
That worked.
Monday AM - working on my blogs and my wonderful daughter comes over. Put her on my lap. She starts talking and moving and WHAMO... cup of milk in key board... blank screen... NO Way! WAY!
A test in influencing your self too. No I did not throw my daughter... but I called my friend got him to come over and see if it could be saved... NO deal.
So my Monday was stuck working on setting up a new computer.
Do I sound bitter... well...
Just sharing! Trials and tribulations of life.
All the best!

" Your BRAVER than you BELIEVE and your STRONGER than you seem and your SMARTER than you THINK"
These words said by Christopher Robin in the Winnie the Pooh dvd my 3 year old daughter is watching ring so loud and clear.
As the story goes, Christopher Robin is trying to tell Pooh that he has to start school and they won't be able to be together as much. Christopher Robin is attempting to show Pooh that he can make it on his own.
Christopher Robin is influencing Pooh in a way that he won't understand until has to use those words to be Brave, Strong and Smart. Which he does fantastically in the story!
The transfer of trust allows Pooh to believe those words. As in business, it is key to build TRUST in order to INFLUENCE your client.
I say to all of you, my friends:
"YOU are braver than you Believe and stronger than YOU seem and YOUR smarter than YOU think!"
